A 3.0 quake, centered north of Moreno Valley (wtf??), hit Saturday night at 6:27 pm. There were no reports of injuries or damage.
Are we due for “The Big One”? According to earthquake scientists**, a “strong and major” earthquake will strike California, most likely the southern portion of the state, within 30 years. The quake that occurred this week in Chino Hills was a “small sample” of The Big One.
Growing up in Southern California, I was always aware of chances that The Big One would strike (and possibly send California floating off towards Hawaii). At school, we participated in earthquake drills and were warned to keep enough water to last until the “authorities” could bring clean water again. It was always a scary thought for me, especially after my mom told me about sitting in a high chair when the 1933 Long Beach earthquake happened. Since then, I’ve been through several, told my kids the same stories and prepared earthquake survival kits. It doesn’t seem as scary anymore, which is probably the wrong attitude to have.
