Gas Woes

The Fox and I were cruising downtown and passed Thrifty Gas at Magnolia and 14th. Regular gas is $4.49 a gallon! That is the highest gas price I think I have personally seen. Yesterday, I paid $4.16 at Arco on 14th and I thought that was high. Check out Gas Buddy for the cheapest gas prices in Riverside. Looks like Arco at Van Buren/Colorado, the 76 at Van Buren/Wells and Valero at Limonite/Pedley are the lowest at 4.05.

It’s not just the U.S suffering from high gas prices.  In France, a gallon is almost $10.  In Turkey, its $11.  Folks in China and India aren’t feeling it as badly as the rest of us because of government subsidies.  Truckers, fishermen and other industries are protesting in Spain, Britain.

Is this going to have any effect on the elections?  Clinton and Obama are sparring over Clinton’s (and McCain’s) idea to suspend federal gas taxes.  Raise gas prices a few more bucks and we’ll see how desperate people get and how far they will go to get a break.

Riverside’s Wi-Fi Launch is Delayed

Aww. The launch of the citywide Wi-Fi network has been delayed by about a month. More transmitters are being installed so that the coverage meets the contract requirement of 95 percent. It has been rescheduled for June 27th. Hopefully this is just a small delay.  A BusinessWeek article tells of companies such as Earthlink and AT&T, who have partnered with cities, are rethinking existing and future projects.

Stuff To Do This Weekend: 5.30 - 6.1

Friday, 5.30:

Go see a movie. Sex and the City, The Happening and The Strangers are out.

Saturday, 5.31:

Hellbound Hayride at Angel’s Sports Bar in Corona. I really like this band. They have a ton of songs on their Myspace page, so take a listen and then go check them out. They are really great live!

Support your favorite local burlesque cutie Carolina Moon at The Art Tease at the Light Gallery.

Knockout at Red Planet Records in Riverside. If you haven’t been here, it is a cool indie record store which doubles as an all ages place to see bands. Check it out.

It’s Highgrove Day at Norton Younglove Community Park. Check out classic cars, a health and safety fair and other family fun.

There are other things going on at Lake Alice, Mario’s Place, Ciao Bella, Worthingtons, The Menagerie, Back to the Grind, etc. most nights of the week. Here’s a downtown parking guide.

RIAM: Who Knew?

Did you know there was such a thing as the Riverside International Automotive Museum? It’s located at 815 Marborough, a street I’ve driven past many times. The museum houses mementos of the “golden age of racing in Riverside”, including race cars, a print/digital library and displays.  Click for the downloadable brochure.  And call before you go.  It’s open Wednesday through Saturday, but with limited hours.

The Riverside International Raceway (not located in Riverside, btw) was popular during the 50’s.  It was torn down in the 80’s, to make way for the Moreno Valley Mall.  I’m putting this on my todo list.

June 3rd Primary Elections: Where The **** Do I Vote?

The June 3rd primaries are a week away.  Are you ready to vote?  Do you even know what is at stake?  Find it all at the Riverside County Registrar of Voters webpage. Find your polling place and sample ballot by looking up your zipcode and street name.  If you vote by mail, you can now check the status of your ballot online.  Want to know what it takes to be an observer?

As I mentioned before, I am really excited because I will be doing my civic duty and participating on Election day AND Election night.  It’s not the presidential election but it is still important.  We have the 31st Senatorial district race, the 44th Congressional district race, state assembly, some judges and a couple of measures on eminent domain.

Random News

Remember those bear paws left on someone’s porch?  It’s now a state matter, being investigated by State fish and game wardens.  Speaking of wildlife, a mini-horse and goat were seen strolling through Fontana this morning.  Hopefully the paw-leaver and owners of the horse and goat are all located.

This isn’t Riverside news, but news nonetheless.  The Fox Theater in Pomona is being renovated.  The last time I saw the inside of that place it was colored in glow paint and someone with a Blues Clues backpack was giving me a massage.  Right on.

Lakers beat the Spurs tonight, but just barely - 93 to 91.  Game 5 is here in LA.  Go team!

A Banning school employee was arrested for being drunk in public, while chaperoning a Spanish club trip to San Diego.  The vodka and margarita mix may have been a bad idea.

Inland Freeway Projects = $$$$

Okay, when J and I started dating in July ‘03 and saw the beginning of the 60/91/215 project, we thought “wow August 2006 is a long time away”.  We saw the orange construction signs indicated the end date of the project and marveled at how long it would take to build the overpass and re-do the freeway lanes.  It’s now ‘08 and stuff is still under construction, although pretty much done at 60/91/215 (yay).  It has to cost a billion by now. Or at least millions more than expected.

Memorial Day Weekend in Riverside Co. = DUI Extravaganza

118 drivers were arrested for DUI over Memorial Day weekend in Riverside County.  I’m not sure how different that is from normal weekends.  Within 48 hours, there were 61.  There was also one DUI fatality - one too many.

Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day everyone! J and I went downtown this morning to check out all of the bikes lined up on Main Street, taking part in this year’s West Coast Thunder IX. Here are some photos (used with permission from Jason Brenenstuhl) from the event:

Hope everyone is having a great Memorial Day and are spending it with loved ones, in remembrance of our military heroes. Special thoughts and prayers go out for the family of John Kirchofer. Love you guys!

Inland Empire Tornado on Video

Is everyone as fascinated (read “freaked out”) about the twisters in Mo. Valley/Perris this week? There were a lot of videos on YouTube of Moreno Valley Tornado and Perris Tornado. Here are a couple of good ones. That was the night I drove to Mo Val to bowl (LOS BOWLRRACHOS ROCK!!). If I had known there had been a tornado I would have never gone.

The first one is from a local blog The 92503 Experience:

Does anyone have any good pix or videos?

it IS Memorial Day weekend.  Memorial Day weekend is for going to the beach and river, drinking, picnicking,  camping and enjoying the supposed Spring/Summer last week.  I think the Earth got the weekend wrong and celebrated Memorial Day weekend last weekend with its 100+ temps and unrelenting sunshine.  But what I was going to say is yes, it is traditionally a party weekend, and even more so because of the Lakers play off game tomorrow, so enjoy.  But call a cab, appoint some kind soul to be your DD or imbibe at home.  Stay off the roads and avoid sobriety checkpoints and dead people.  thx

It’s The End Of The World As We Know It… and I Feel Fine

Why is everyone talking about weird, end-of-the-world disasters and such? That was all the buzz around the water cooler at work today. Maybe because of all the weather madness, like funnel clouds and hail and pouring rain. In So. Cal. In May. Following days of 100+ heat. Yeah, I got it.

The hail and tornadoes did not keep Los BowlRrachos from playing in a bowling tournament at ABC Bowling in Mo. Val. Traffic along Allesandro from Riverside to MV was worse than ever due to the torrential storm that followed the same path. We played other units and offices from The Company, personally representing XXXX Information Technology, and representin’ well. No trophy for us, this time but we were winners in our hearts.

Tornado in Mo Valley? WT..?

The Weather Bureau or whatever they are, have issued a tornado warning north of Perris, near March AFB. There is a special warning for mobile home residents.. you’re f**ked!

The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a

* Tornado Warning for…
west central Riverside County in southwest California…

* until 530 PM PDT

* at 451 PM PDT… trained weather spotters reported a funnel cloud
near Perris… or 7 miles south of Moreno Valley… moving south at
10 mph.

* Other locations in the warning include but are not limited to Sun
City and Canyon Lake

If in Mobile homes or vehicles… evacuate them and get inside a
sturdy shelter. If no shelter is available… lie flat in the nearest
ditch or other low spot and cover your head with your hands.

The safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. Get under a
workbench or other piece of sturdy furniture. If no basement is
available… seek shelter on the lowest floor of the building in an
interior hallway or room such as a closet. Use blankets or pillows to
cover your body and always stay away from windows.

If in Mobile homes or vehicles… evacuate them and get inside a
substantial shelter. If no shelter is available… lie flat in the
nearest ditch or other low spot and cover your head with your hands.

Rain in Riverside

It’s raining.  Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t it 100+ degrees just a couple of days ago?  Weren’t the Fox and I sweating our balls off earlier this week?

Now look at it:

rainy Riverside street

Not that I mind.  I love the rain.  God knows we need the rain out here.  Too bad it wasn’t raining gas.

Dust off your umbrellas, if you know where they are.  Here’s the forcast (thanks pe.com):

Election Countdown Begins!

Are you ready to vote? The next big election is just weeks away, on June 3rd. I am very excited about this election, not just because of my usual love for exercising my right to vote, but also because I will be participating in the process. I received a bulletin at work, asking for County employees who are User Support Technicians (PC techs) to volunteer for ballot counting. I signed up and went for training today at the Registrar of Voters office. We got a tour around the facility and learned what we will be doing on election night.

You can get involved too. First, register to vote. Second, work the polls on Election Day. (Or work the poles too if you’ve got the talent haw haw). Third, be an observer. Get involved with your candidate’s campaign. Do something. This is going to be an exciting year for elections so don’t let it pass you by and end up complaining about it when something doesn’t go the way you want it.

Today was the last day to register to vote for the June 3rd election, and hopefully you were able to register. If not, register for the November elections!

Open Letter to Joe: This message is to you,  who has never voted in your life but just registered this week - Do it, it’s fun! Your dad will be proud.  Jessi will be proud :)

More election news to come.

Poor teddy. Severed bear paws were found this weekend in a Riverside neighborhood near the airport.  Watch out poachers - the punishment is $10,000 and one year in jail.

Happy Cinco De Mayo

Today is Cinco De Mayo, a non-obligatory but extremely fun holiday for my people. I made homemade tacos and rice for dinner on Sunday as part of an early celebration and so that I could go out and celebrate Monday night also. Might as well enjoy a couple days worth of fun.

What’s going on?

If you want to make a healthy CDM meal, unlike mine which was abounding with fat and deliciousness, increase the vegetable content and try reduced fat cheese. Otherwise, try CDM recipes from the Food Network, especially that Michelada or Margarita recipe.

There were a couple of things on the weekend, a parade and celebration at Villegas Park and a car show and celebration in Corona. I hope everyone had a fun time at those events. There were just too many things going on this very weekend to enjoy them all.

Lake Alice is celebrating Cinco De Mayo with Superbad and drink specials. So is El Torito @ The Plaza and Park Sierra. X103.9 is celebrating Drinko De Mayo at Stingers in San Bernardino (get a DD for that one!) and 99.1 KGGI will be at RockNLounge in Redlands. If you know of anything else going on, leave a comment! Be safe and no drinking and driving!

Thunder Over The Empire - 5.3 & 5.4.08

The March Field Airfest was a lot of fun this year. J and I went together on Sunday afternoon. At first, we weren’t able to get in. We braved Cactus Ave. and merging cars to get in line and were turned away because it was packed. We took another trip around and were able to enter the base. Parking was well organized. It could have been insanity parking or leaving but it wasn’t. Good job Civil Air Patrol! We stayed to watch the Thunderbirds. Here’s a video I took while they got in their planes and taxied up the runway. After about 5 minutes I realized they weren’t going anywhere soon. I also took a ton of pictures, including some planes in the air. I wish I had a better camera (and maybe I will very soon).

Local: Man Gets Sick After Drinking Tainted Gatorade

A Riverside man purchased a six pack of red G2 Gatorade at the Vons on La Sierra, drank some of it and got sick. His neighbor took him to Parkview for treatment. He was released but the investigation continues. The Feds may join the investigation.

That’s a scary thought. I go to that Vons because its close to work. J drinks Gatorade every day. They did notice the safety seal was broken on 2 bottles of the six pack. I always check for that. I think.

Update: The drinks have been pulled off the shelf.

Tom Sends Katie To Local Scientology Boot Camp

Haha this “news” is straight from x17 so it may not be completely true but it was enlightening. Purportedly Tom Cruise sent Katie to Gold Base, a Scientology compound in Hemet, for some intense indoctrination spiritual counseling. Who knew there was such a place as Gold Base, right in our own backyard? Apparently a lot of people, just not me.

Saturday Recapped

Check out the coverage (and coming soon video) of this year’s Show and Go from Instantriverside.com.   What perfect weather for an outdoor event.  Warm but cooling down nicely.  I didn’t take any pictures today but hope to tomorrow.  As I made my way through town today, I saw all kinds of cool cars heading towards downtown.

Big Brown wins this year’s Kentucky Derby.  KROQ had a Microbrew Festival at Santa Anita so it would have been a great day to watch the ponies run, bet on the Derby, drink microbrews and see Dramarama.
